Casey MacGill performs music that swings. Nat "King" Cole Trio meets the Mills Brothers. Fats Waller meets Fats Domino. Slim Galliard meets Fred Astaire. It is American music of many decades and no decade in particular, all happening at the same time, woven into a seamless, beautiful whole. At the core of his sound are his band's sometimes sweet, sometimes rough-hewn three-part harmony vocals and a piano-ukulele-bass-and-drums rhythm section that swings in a variety of textures.  www.CaseyMacGill.com

Joy Spring: Celebrating Clifford Brown featuring Charlie Porter - 7:30pm
126 NE Alberta St
Portland, Oregon 97211
United States [map]
Price: 20

Although Clifford Brown left behind only four years worth of studio recordings before his untimely death in 1956 at the mere age of 25, his impact as a jazz trumpeter is undeniable. In his short and stunning career, “Brownie” gigged and/or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughn, Harold Land, Lou Donaldson, and his most enduring collaborator Max Roach. Brown’s compositions such as “Joy Spring”, “Cherokee”, “Delilah” and “Daahoud” remain as classic tunes of the bop era.

Presented in partnership with the Soul’d Out Music Festival, Joy Spring: Celebrating Clifford Brown will shine the spotlight on Charlie Porter, perhaps the best jazz trumpet player the Pacific Northwest has to offer, who will offer his take on Brownie’s classic songs, style and melodies. Joining Porter will be David Evans (saxophone), Dan Gaynor (piano), Tom Wakeling (bass) and Christopher Brown (drums), all fantastic Portland-based musicians in their own right.

Price: $20 & $15 for students

Charlie Porter and Tom Wakeling combine forces to pay homage to the inspiring music of Clifford Brown and Max Roach.

The Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet was described by The New York Times as “perhaps the definitive bop group until Mr. Brown’s fatal automobile accident in 1956”. Indeed, the short-lived group continues to inspire today, as evidenced by this evening of tribute featuring some of the finest musicians in the western United States.

A graduate of both the Julliard School of Music and Manhattan School of Music, trumpeter Charlie Porter has toured throughout most of the United States and abroad in Europe, Asia, the Baltic States, the Middle East and Africa with musicians such as Joe Zawinul & Paquito D’Rivera.  In addition to his own quartet being selected twice by Jazz at Lincoln Center to tour abroad, he toured as a member of the JALC All-Star Quartet.  He currently holds the trumpet chair in Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra.

For over 40 years, bassist Tom Wakeling has put his bass to work at jazz festivals, concert halls, and jazz clubs throughout North America and Europe.  Tom has performed with a who’s who of jazz that includes Arturo Sandoval, Lee Konitz, Mel Torme, Benny Golson, James Moody, Herb Ellis, Mose Allison, Charlie Rouse, Houston Person, Ernie Watts, Ken Peplowski, Charles McPherson, Scott Hamilton, Carl Fontana,  and Herb Geller.  Among the rhythm section greats he has performed with are Jeff Hamilton, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Mickey Roker, Lewis Nash, Butch Miles, Grady Tate, Mike Clark, Clayton Cameron, Herlin Riley, Chuck Redd, Bill Mays, Alan Broadbent, Dave Frishberg, Gene Bertoncini, Larry Fuller, Roger Kellaway, Tamir Hendleman, Mike Wofford, Bill Cunliffe, Art Lande, and Edward Simon.

Saxophonist and composer Brice Winston is a native of Tucson, AZ, but cut his teeth learning jazz in the city where the music began, New Orleans. For more than 16 years he lived in New Orleans performing with numerous world-class musicians including such notables as Brian Blade, Ellis Marsalis and Nicholas Payton. After touring with Nicholas Payton’s band for a year, his acquaintance with band leader and composer Terence Blanchard led to a close musical relationship that continues to this day. Brice has been touring with Blanchard for over ten years, affording him the opportunity to perform and record with some of the greatest musicians in the world including Herbie Hancock and Dave Holland, as well as record for movies scored by Blanchard for film director Spike Lee. March 2, 2010 marks the release date of his inaugural CD, Introducing Brice Winston, recorded in New York with former Blanchard band mates Aaron Parks, Derrick Hodge and Kendrick Scott. Brice currently finds himself back in his hometown of Tucson, AZ running the Tucson Community Music School (TCSM) and continues to record and perform in jazz clubs and music festivals all over the world. Additional information can be found by visiting www.bricewinston.com.

Nick Manson is a talented jazz pianist and composer. The two-time Emmy award winning multifaceted Nick Manson is also a composer, arranger and producer who has excelled in several fields. His piano playing is swinging, lyrical, consistently innovative and quite individual.

Dom Moio has played with jazz luminaries such as Mose Allison, Herb Ellis, Ahmad Jamal and Clark Terry. He also had the opportunity to meet and study with legendary Cuban Master Percussionist Walfredo de los Reyes Sr. Among his frequent record dates, Moio has recorded two CDs with Jazz great Carl Fontana. He also recorded with The Jazz Nonet with Chuck Marohnic and Greg Hopkins. In 1997, Moio had the opportunity to do a re-recording of the Four Tops hits with the group’s original singers, playing both drums and Latin percussion. Recent recordings include I Got ‘cha Drums Right Here and Seeds with Chuck Marohnic. Mel Bay has published two of Moio’s books: Latin Percussion in Perspective and Be-Bop Phrasing for Drums.

NW 10th & Everett
Portland, OR 97202
503-295-6542 [map]
Price: $20-25

Chuck Israels is a composer/arranger/bassist who has worked with Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, J.J. Johnson, John Coltrane, and many others. He is best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio from 1961 through 1966 and for his pioneering accomplishments in Jazz Repertory as Director of the National Jazz Ensemble from 1973 to 1981.  He directed the jazz studies program at Western Washington University from 1986 to 2009 when he retired from that position and moved to Portland, OR, to return to full time professional musical life forming the Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra.

Israels had the good fortune to be included in a recording session with John Coltrane in March of 1958 which this program draws its inspiration from.  States Israels, “John had gained attention in the Miles Davis Quintet and was one of the accomplished tenor players of the period but not yet the iconic idol he was to become.  It was a milestone in my work as a recording jazz musician – my first professional recording.”

“Tribute to Wynton Marsalis and Kenny Garrett”
Featuring The Christopher Brown Quintet

Ever since the early 1980’s, the press has taken it upon themselves to ascribe the moniker of “Young Lion” to those young Jazz musicians who have exemplified a clear commitment towards upholding the same high traditions of excellence as their predecessors.
And since a small spotlight will be cast upon the concept of the “Young Lion” as part of the programming within the 2015 PDX Jazz Festival, Portland’s own Christopher Brown will get the ball rolling in that direction exactly one week early by paying tribute to both Wynton Marsalis and Kenny Garrett—arguably two of the most influential “Young Lion’s” to ever be branded with such a title.
Joining Christopher on this performance will be Charlie Porter (trumpet), John Nastos (sax), Dylan Sundstrom (bass), and George Colligan (piano).
So be sure to catch this show, as we’re quite certain that this will be one of those performances that will be talked about for quite some time.

You can guarantee seating with a dinner reservation…please call the club at 503-295-6542 for reservations.

Under the musical direction of David Evans, Charlie Porter, George Colligan, Tom Wakeling, and Alan Jones celebrate the music of Dexter Gordon. A “sophisticated giant” of a tenor man at six-foot-six inches, Gordon was an early pioneer of the Bebop era.  He got his start with Lionel Hampton and Never Looked Back.  Playing with the best bands of the war era, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, and Illinois Jacquet.  Having influences by Lester Young, Gordon played and recorded with Charlie Parker and was an influence on John Coltrane.  He spent considerable time in Europe and documented upwards of 50 solo albums.  His Blue Note sessions are considered his best and define the golden age of mainstream jazz.  His 1986 performance on Round Midnight earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Leading Role and he won a Grammy® for Best Soundtrack.

Portland, OR 97202
503-295-6542 [map]
Price: 15

Multi-album independent recording artist, Alan Jones, will perform with his newly created “Storyline Sextet”.
Alan Jones has established himself as one of the “world’s great living jazz musicians, a completely natural, intuitive and profound musical explorer”. His incredible upbeat attitude and positive energy combine to make him one of the most sought after performers and educators in the business today.

Over the past 3 years, Alan has put his focus on developing his innovative music academy, AJAM.  Now that things are organized and running smoothly, the focus has shifted back to composing, band leading and touring. The Alan Jones Storyline Sextet is a product of new inspiration, new ideas and a collaboration with some of the best, most creative young musicians on the scene.
Along with the new band is a body of new, original music inspired by the concept of storytelling.  The communicating of ideas, the trading of tales between good friends, and the significance of how interesting music – along with exceptional musicians – can tell a “story” that directly connects the player to the listener, are the inspiration behind Alan’s new music.

The band features Alan Jones (drums, composer), Greg Goebel (piano), John Nastos (alto sax), Charlie Porter (trumpet), Nicole Glover (tenor sax), and  Jon Lakey (bass).

A great jazz improvisation tells a story. What one can hear in the characters, plot twists, love scenes and murders is as captivating as any great film or novel.

It's been over 3 years since the Alan Jones Sextet played their last gig. During those 3+ years Alan put his focus on developing his innovative music academy AJAM, but now that things are organized and running smoothly the focus has shifted back to composing, band leading and touring. The Alan Jones Storyline Sextet is a product of new inspiration, new ideas and a collaboration with some of the best, most creative young musicians on the scene.

Along with the new band is a body of new, original music inspired by the concept of storytelling.

The communicating of ideas, the trading of tall tales between good friends and the significance of how interesting music - along with exceptional musicians - can tell a “story” that directly connects the player to the listener, are the inspiration behind Alan's new music.

I want to remove that imaginary line between performer and audience. I want to tell stories, and hear stories from the musicians and the audience both.

Alan Jones

“This is a big band with an approach that differs from other large organizations, new and old... Israels’ charts are the heart of his band’s unique personality. It is definitely not a band that clubs you into submission. It is mellow, subtle, highly melodic, with lines that move in wondrous ways. This is not to say that the band does not swing or that it does not reach peaks that excite the audience. Its long suit, however, is the coloration and emotional depth it achieves through the voicings and judicious use of solo space. Israels has fashioned an orchestra that flows in beautiful channels, and beauty is something jazz can use these days. This is a band to check out. The originals are original, the standards are freshly reworked, and they are played with passion and understanding. The pulse, never bombastic, moves the listener as surely as it moves the band. Israels deserves a lot of credit, but more importantly, the opportunity to be widely heard.” Ira Gitler, Down Beat
